30 passengers were injured when an Etihad Airways flight encountered turbulence

New Delhi: More than 30 passengers en route to Jakarta were injured when an Etihad Airways flight encountered severe and unexpected turbulence just before landing. The plane, an Airbus A330-200 from Abu Dhabi was about 45 minutes away from Jakarta on Wednesday when turbulence hit the plane.

A statement from Etihad Airways said that the flight EY474 landed safely at Soekarno Hatta. However a total of 31 passengers and crew were injured. At least nine other passengers are said to have received serious injuries and were taken to a local hospital, it said.

A video footage from the flight showed passengers praying and crying out as the plane shook.

The cabin luggage bins were also reportedly damaged and passengers said oxygen masks were released during the turbulence.

Officials from the airport and Indonesia's National Transportation Safety Committee are inspecting the plane.
