End to the Philippines Presidential race; Rodrigo Duterte declares victory

Philippines election: Rodrigo claims victory

Philippines: After an unbeatable lead in the country’s presidential race, Philippine mayor Rodrigo Duterte has claimed victory in the Philippine presidential election.  Duterte is said to now push the constitutional amendments and change to a parliamentary system of government, report says.
Following six years of economic expansion and political stability in the Philippines, the international business experts  describe the leader, who has admitted knowing little about economic policy, as a wild card who could threaten growth and investment in one of Asia’s best-performing economy.
In the past six years under President Benigno Aquino, the Philippines has shown significant growth amonst the emerging economies. An anti-corruption drive has boosted the country’s reputation and growth has ticked up to an annual average of 6.3 per cent over the past five years.
Key issues have been the economy, crime and corruption. Duterte was perceived to be the anti-establishment candidate in a country frustrated with the slow pace of change and a small clique from the political elite in power for years, says a report from The Guardian.
