New York: US singer Christina Grimmie, a former contestant of reality show ‘The Voice’, was shot dead after her concert in Orlando, Florida, on Friday night. An attacker shot her and then turned the gun on himself while she was signing autographs.
“It is with a heavy heart that we can confirm that Christina has passed away and went home to be with the Lord,” her publicist Heather Weiss said in a statement early on Saturday. “We ask at this time that you respect the privacy of her family and friends in their time of mourning.”
“The 22-year-old singer was signing autographs after a concert at Orlando’s Plaza Live when a male suspect shot Grimmie,” Orlando Police Department spokesperson Wanda Miglio said at a news conference.
Miglio said, “The suspect fatally shot himself when he was tackled by Grimmie’s brother.”
Miglio called the shooting a “very tragic event” and praised Grimmie’s brother as a “hero.”
However, the police did not identify the shooter and said a motive is not yet known. “The attacker was equipped with two guns,” said a police official.
The shooting occurred in the late hours of June 10, around 10:45 p.m. There were about 60 people in the area at the time, but nobody else was hurt, Miglio said.
Grimmie was third in season 6 of ‘The Voice’, NBC’s singing competition, which aired in 2014.
