New Delhi: Convicted murderer Oscar Pistorius on Wednesday removed his prosthetic legs and hobbled across a courtroom on his stumps on Wednesday to show how vulnerable he is as the paralympian seeks to avoid prison for murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
The 29-year-old Olympic runner faces a minimum 15-year jail term for murdering his girlfriend in 2013. The case attracted worldwide interest and divided South Africa. He will be sentenced on July 6.
Pistorius was seen trembling and tearful as he rested his right hand on a desk for support as his lawyers pleaded with an urge to sentence him to community service rather than prison.
Pistorius’ defense advocate Barry Roux insisted that the threat perceived by Pistorius was real to him, with no direct intent to kill, and the court needed to take that into account. Roux also insisted that such a lengthy sentence would be shockingly inappropriate and that no court would apply the minimum sentence in this case, as the court was dealing with a reduced moral blameworthiness upon the athlete.
The victim’s father Barry Steenkamp said that Oscar Pistorius must pay for his crime.
Prosecutor Nel claimed that Pistorius had failed to show remorse saying, “There’s a chasm between regret and remorse”
“Real remorse would have been the accused taking the court into his confidence, telling the court why I fired that shot, why I did what I did. We don’t have that” he added.
Pistorius has been found guilty of killing girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. Though he has always said he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder when he fired four shots through a locked toilet door in his Pretoria home, killing her almost instantly.
