Bangladesh blogger Ananta Bijoy Das hacked to death. Third such incident this year! Are writers being killed for express

BANGLADESH: After an American atheist blogger was hacked to death in Bangladesh in February, a secular blogger on Tuesday Ananta Bijoy Das suffered the same in north-eastern Bangladesh.

This is the third such deadly attack since the beginning of this year, police said.

According to the reports, a masked gang having machetes in the city of Sylhet attacked Bangladesh blogger Ananta Bijoy Das who wrote blogs for Mukto-mona, a website once moderated by Avijit Roy, who as well was hacked to death in February.

Das was killed after he left his home and was on his way to work at a bank. The attackers after leaving Das in an unconscious state fled the spot. The police have started the search operation to track them at the earliest.

A friend of the deceased informed that 32-year-old Das was on the hit list of atheist bloggers held by Islamist militants.

“In recent months, (Mr Das) received threats from extremists for his writings. He was on their hit list,” Debasish Debu was quoted by a news agency.

Das on Monday criticized police for their handling of the investigations into the attacks on Roy and Babu on Facebook. Ahead of joining a bank, he worked as a journalist for a local newspaper.

The attacks on bloggers who are critical of Islam have been disturbing the regularity of events in Bangladesh.

The country has experienced two such incidents this year where two were killed who expressed their views on religious intolerance. All three murders were carried out publicly on city streets.

Here are the previous events:

•    A Bangladesh-born US writer Avijit Roy was killed in a machete attack while he was visiting Dhaka, Bangladesh capital in February. Roy criticized the religious intolerance at large. The incident saw massive protests from the students and social activists’ who slammed the authorities of failing to protect critics of religious bigotry.  An Islamist was arrested in the case.

•    The incident was then followed by another killing. Blogger Washiqur Rahman Babu was hacked to death just outside his residence in Dhaka in March this year. Two madrassa students were arrested over Rahman’s killing.

Several bloggers have died in past two years in Bangladesh, either murdered or found dead in mysterious circumstances.
