Paris: The F1 (Formule 1) hotel in the commune of Bollène in southeastern France was surrounded by police and emergency services on Tuesday after reports that a gunman had entered the property of the motel chain.
“A deranged man is holed up in the Formule 1 hotel,” the spokeswoman said.
The hotel was immediately evacuated and the police present at the scene cordoned off a perimeter of about 250 meters around the hotel. It is believed that the man was armed with a knife and there was a possibility that he could also be wearing an explosive device. So far no hostage crisis has been reported.
The Marseille bomb squad is on its way and the authorities are yet to release further information on the incident.
France continues to be on high alert following the recent attack in the city of Nice and the series of attacks in Paris last November.
