President Barack Obama finally joins Twitter after six years

WASHINGTON: President Barack Obama is finally prepared to face the biggest challenge of communicating with his followers in millions in not more than 140 characters on Twitter.

The famously loquacious President on Monday joined the micro-blogging site and shared his witty sense of humour in his first tweet itself.

“Hello, Twitter! It's Barack. Really! Six years in, they're finally giving me my own account” read his first tweet from his personal account.

The official feed of the President handled by Organizing for Action staff has more than 59.3m followers.

An entry on the White House website blog read, “The @POTUS Twitter account will serve as a new way for President Obama to engage directly with the American people, with tweets coming exclusively from him.”

The US President is currently following 65 people that include Bill Clinton, George Bush and @FLOTUS, the First Lady's account. Obama has yet not followed Hillary Clinton, UK Prime Minister David Cameron or even Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

While his official account confirmed his presence on the social media platform, this is how he started his Twitter life within few moments of his joining.
