New Delhi: The 50th anniversary of International Literacy Day is being observed on Thursday. The theme for this year's golden jubilee observance is  'Reading the past, writing the future'.

“This year, the world has embarked on implementing the ambitious and transformational 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development." United Nations Chief Ban Ki-moon said ahead of the occasion.

With its 17 universal, integrated and interdependent Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the 2030 Agenda is an action plan for people, planet, partnership and peace”, he added.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) had proclaimed September 8 as Literacy Day on Nov. 17, 1965 with the aim to create awareness among masses on the importance of literacy.
