New Delhi: West Midlands Police, one of the largest police forces in the United Kingdom, was totally ridiculed after its chief made a remark about how he would boost the number of ethnic minorities in the force.
Most of Britain's prominent police forces have already accepted Hijab as part of the uniform for female Muslim officers. But it was after the West Midlands Police Chief Constable remark which stated that the force would be considering allowing full-length traditional burkas to become part of the female officer’s uniform which provoked widespread condemnation.
The chief constable, in a bid to present himself as more tolerant, had said this, "We would need to consider our own rules and cultural sensitivity. Clearly we don't have any barriers relating to the burka. As it stands we have not had any approaches from potential recruits asking to wear the burka, but if such an approach was made it is something we would have to consider."
According to the Daily Mail, the West Midlands Police will be discussing whether or not to allow the traditional Islamic dress to be used at work. But the Muslim Council of Britain has come out to shun this ridiculous idea which calls for wearing of full-length burka for female officers.
"How could you possibly have an officer pursuing a suspect down the street while wearing a burka over their face? It is frankly a mad idea," the council said.
West Midlands Police have already approved the use of Hijabs since it only partially covers the head and the neck of the individual.
