New Delhi: Terrence Crutcher, a 40-year-old black man in Oklahoma, was shot dead at point-blank range by police officers on Friday.
Anger and public unrest is seething in the United States after string of events where police officers, majority of them white, shot dead unarmed black suspects purportedly due to racial prejudice pertaining to the colour of their skin.
Terrence had his hands up in the air and was leaning against his car, a position deemed completely natural in face of police interrogation. However, after he is surrounded by four or five police officers, one of them abruptly shoots him point blank while another fires taser at him. Video of the incident which has gone viral shows Crutcher putting his hands up before the police.
The officer who shot dead Terrence Crutcher has been named as woman Officer Betty Shelby, who lost composure during the incident and shot dead an unarmed Crutcher.
Tulsa Police Chief Chuck Jordan said, "There was no gun on the suspect or in the suspect's vehicle."
Terrence was rushed to the hospital after he was shot, but doctors declared him brought dead.
