New Delhi: The kind of things being purchased by moguls in Dubai has always made headlines all around the world. We have also seen social media memes where a Dubai businessman expresses outrage at his son after the latter refuses to drive in a gold Ferrari sports car to his college.
Inspired by similar sentiments is the story of Balwinder Sahani, an Indian businessman who paid a staggering $9 (60 crore) million to buy a unique license registration plate. He is the owner of RSG International, a property management company with stakes literally everywhere.
On Saturday at a public auction, Balwinder purchased the unique 'D5' license plate for 33 million Dirhams.
"I like collecting unique number plates and I am proud to have got this number. I like number nine and D5 adds up to nine, so I went for it," Sahani told the press after the auction.
"I have collected 10 number plates so far and I am looking forward to having more. It's a passion. This number will go to one of my Rolls Royces," he added.
However, this is not his first rodeo with large figures mentioned for meagre things. Sahani had purchased the number 09 for 25 million Dirhams last year.
Although, auctioning unique license plates are not a unique phenomenon in Dubai, Sahani's huge spending on the license plate is probably one of the most expensive quotes the auctioneers in Dubai have seen – over a license plate.
