United Nation: The UN General Assembly on Thursday appointed former Portugal PM Antonio Guterres as new Secretary-General. Guterres will be replacing the retiring chief Ban Ki-moon on January 1 next year.
The term of office for Guterres will start on January 1 next year and end on December 31, 2021 as per the reports.
67-year-old Guterres, served as UN High Commissioner for refugees from June 2005 to December last year. The socialist politician is expected to play a more prominent role as the world’s diplomat in his new term.
Before joining the UN refugee agency, Guterres spent more than 20 years in government and public service. He was the prime minister of Portugal from 1995 to 2002.
