In a significant step, the United States (US) on Wednesday listed Pakistan among nations and regions providing ‘safe havens’ to the terrorists. The US said that terror organisation Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) continue to operate, train, organise and raise funds inside the country.
The United States in its annual country report on terrorism said that Pakistan did not take substantive action against other externally focused groups such a LeT and JeM.
However, the report did mention that Pakistani military and security forces undertook operations against groups that conducted attacks within Pakistan such as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan.
“Pakistan did not take substantial action against the Afghan Taliban or Haqqani, or substantially limit their ability to threaten US interests in Afghanistan, although Pakistan supported efforts to bring both groups into an Afghan-led peace process,” the annual report further mentioned.
US State Department’s Country Reports on Terrorism 2016 also mentioned, “ISIS remained the most potent terrorist threat to global security.”

Speaking to NewsX, Former Deputy Chief of Indian Army Raj Kadyan said, “Pakistan has fully qualified itself to be declared as a terror state, these are the steps heading in that direction.”
“With the US naming these terror organisation, who have been involved in attacking Indian territory, is a positive indication. The time is not far when the world body will declare Pakistan a terror state. Pakistan is breading terror and nurturing terror,” Kadyan added.
Defence Expert GJ Singh said that this is a major shift in the American policy towards Pakistan.
The latest move by US has come a couple of weeks after they termed head of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen, Sayeed Salahudeen as global terrorist.
