Mumbai terror attack 26/11 mastermind, Hafiz Saeed, who carries a US $ 10 million bounty on his head for terror activities has slapped a Rs 10 Crore defamation notice to Pakistan Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif for terming Hafiz Saeed as ‘darling of the United States’.
In late September, while speaking at the Asia Society forum in New York, Pakistan Foreign Minister Asif said that their country condemn terrorism in all forms and consider Hafiz Saeed, the Haqqanis and the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) as liabilities.
FM Khawaja Asif further added that the country is we aware of the activities carried by them but is unable to act upon it because it lacks ‘proper assets’.
According to reports, while targeting United States over the criticism, the Foreign Minister also said that the US which is currently pressurising Pakistan to take action, once used to treat them as ‘darlings’.
Taking the cognizance of the statements, Hafiz Saeed’s lawyer, AK Dogar has sent the notice to the foreign minister on behalf of his client who heads the Jamaat-ud-Dawah (JuD), a front for the LeT militant group.
The notice read, “Hafiz Saeed is respected as a deeply religious and devout Muslim. Saeed has never been near the White House, not to speak of wined and dined.”
While talking to a daily Saeed’s counsel, AK Dogar said, “He is a patriotic Islam-loving Muslim following the dictates of the Prophet. This is a defamatory statement punishable under Section 500 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) to five years imprisonment and with a fine. ”
“The imputation of wining is a false statement which has injured the reputation of my client and lowered him in the estimation of others. This is slander and actionable libel. I am constrained to issue this 14 days’ notice of the intention of my client to bring an action against you. My client intends to file a suit for damages to the tune of Rs 10 crore for injuring his reputation not only in Pakistan but all over the world,” he added.
Apart from this, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Asif was recently in the headlines after he said that he was proposed by the NSA to swap ex-Indian Navy officer Kulbhushan Jadhav, who was allegedly charged with espionage by Pakistan’s military court, with Peshawar Terror attack mastermind, the attack which took place at a school had left many dead and scores injured and most of them were children.
Saeed and his four aides were placed under house arrest in Lahore on January 30 under the anti-terrorism act. The JuD has been declared as a foreign terrorist organisation by the United States in June 2014.
