    India conducts surgical strike in Pakistan

    The Indian Army conducted an overnight surgical strikes, as a befitting retaliation to Pakistan along the LOC on September 29, 2016 . All the Indian parties came together to hail the Army for successfully executing the surgical strikes and backed Modi government's decision.


    500 & 1000 rupee notes demonetized

    The policy of Demonetisation of Rs 500 and 1000 banknotes, was enacted by the Government of India on 8 November, 2016, stopping the usage of the notes after November 9, 2016. This led to a major cash crunch nationwide and was welcomed with mixed reactions from the people.

    Triple Talaaq issue

    The All India Muslim Women Personal Law Board (AIMWPLB) filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking a ban on triple talaq, and talaaq given over email, sms, or by post to be declared invalid. The centre backed the petition describing the practice to be "misplaced in a secular country."


    Tamil Nadu Assembly Election

    Tamil Nadu Assembly election held on 16 May 2016 for 232 seats was a much hyped story of the year. AIADMK under Jayalalithaa won the elections and became the first ruling party to be re-elected in Tamil Nadu since 1984.

    TATA Sons Sacks Cyrus Mistry

    Tata Sons removed Cyrus Mistry as its chairman, nearly four years after he took over the reins of the over $100 billion salt-to-software conglomerate. Tata Sons chairman emeritus, Ratan Tata, whom Mistry had replaced on December 29, 2012, was appointed as the interim chairman of the group. The search committee was formed to look for a replacement.


    Patanjali's Balakrishna enters Forbes list

    Patanjali Ayurved's Acharya Balkrishna, known as a close associate of yoga guru Ramdev, entered the annual Forbes list of India's 100 Richest People. He is at the 48th position with a net worth of $2.5 billion.


    Rise in salaries of govt. employees

    Accepting recommendations of the Seventh Pay Commission, the government approved a big jump in salaries of central government staff and similar raises in pensions that will benefit some 10 million people with effect from August. Arrears dating back to January 2016 are expected to be paid before 31 March 2017.


    Parliament passes GST

    The long-delayed Goods and Services Tax (GST) Constitutional Bill was passed by Parliament. The Constitution (122nd Amendment) Bill was passed by the Lok Sabha in May 2015. The Bill commonly referred as concept of "one nation, one tax" is likely to make services, such as hotels, cellphone bills, air and train tickets costlier. GST, which is expected to be implemented from April 1, 2017, may make goods like cars, SUVs, and water heaters cheaper.


    Vijay Mallya escape

    Liqour baron Vijay Mallya, who owes Indian banks Rs 9,000 crore reportedly flew to London from Delhi. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has now obtained non-bailable warrant against the alleged fugitive businessman, who was once hailed as 'King of Good Times', and is forwarding it to the UK government for extradition.
