New Delhi: There’s nothing new about a manufacturer increasing production to meet the demand for a car. However, in this case, it’s happened before so much as one unit has even been delivered! Then again, few cars have the enviable legacy of the Ford GT and while its production has only just begun, Ford has doubled the manufacturing period of the supercar.
Initially, the American motoring giant was expected to produce 500 units of the GT over a period of two years (250 per annum). However, the company received around 7,000 applications to buy one and to satiate more, if not all of the demand, the GT will now be produced for four years. Effectively, this could mean that Ford will make 1,000 instead of just 500 GTs, though an official number hasn’t been given out.
“While we can’t build enough Ford GTs for everyone who has applied, we are going to produce additional vehicles in an effort to satisfy more of our most loyal Ford ambassadors,” says Dave Pericak, global director, Ford Performance. “We want to keep Ford GT exclusive, but at the same time we know how vital this customer is to our brand.” he added.
Year three of production will support applicants who were placed on the wait list; previously deferred applicants and those who missed the initial application window will be served by production year four. The application process for the fourth year of production will reopen in early 2018. Those who already applied to own the car will only need to update their request.
Priced at $450,000 (over Rs 3 crore), the all-new Ford GT is powered by a twin-turbocharged, 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 engine that produces over 600PS of power. Transmission duties are carried out by a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.
It will be a long wait before we see the GT in India, but till then, check out our first drive of another Ford legend here or feast your eyes on some performance enhanced Mustangs here!
