Just a couple of months after a reported rift between the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Central government, RBI governor Urjit Patel on Monday resigned from his post citing personal reasons. The departing governor, however, mentioned nothing of the rift in his statement but his resignation has once again got the eternal rivals – the BJP and the Congress – at loggerheads. BJP’s Subramanian Swamy has expressed concern over the sudden resignation of Patel but the Congress’ top brass has launched a tirade against the BJP leadership.
In his statement, Patel said that he will step down from the governor’s post with immediate effect and extended his wishes to the Central bank’s staff and management. Earlier in November, all hell broke loose when reports surfaced claiming that the Central government has demanded Rs 3.6 lakh crore from the Reserve Bank of India. But the RBI governor stayed firm and did not cave into the demands of the BJP, as per reports. Patel did not mention anything of the reported demand and even the BJP has reiterated that there is no bad blood between the Central government and the Central bank.
Here are the reactions on RBI Governor Urjit Patel’s resignation as they pour in from the political fraternity:
