OpenAI’s latest move to announce ChatGPT Go plan at ₹399/month ($4.57) is being carefully observed as a possible market share game-changer in India, its second-largest user base after the US. With the adoption of internet growing rapidly across the country, analysts recommend the new plan could benefit OpenAI leap ahead of its competitors in the AI race.

OpenAI is aiming at millions of user

As per Reuters and Business Standard, India is on a pathway to exceed the US as OpenAI’s largest market, driven by a young, tech-savvy population and widespread mobile internet usage. By offering a significantly low-cost plan, OpenAI is targeting millions of users currently trusting on the free version of ChatGPT.

The ChatGPT Go plan provides 10 times more values compared to the free usage, along with faster results, the plan provides access to GPT-5, and improvised regional languages support. Experts view this as part of a long-term strategy to convert free users into paying subscribers.

“OpenAI is not just selling its product, it is also building long-term loyalty,” said a technology analyst at JPMorgan, as conveyed by Business Insider. “This pricing gives it a foothold in the price-sensitive Indian market while creating an on-ramp for more advanced offerings.”

Open AI Vs Competitors

Google’s Gemini Advanced and Microsoft’s Copilot Pro are the company’s key competitors in the AI space. They are priced a way too higher at ₹1,950–₹2,000/month, according to Business Today and Mint. This sharp gap in pricing could give OpenAI, a favour, specifically amongst students, freelancers, and SMBs.

Industry viewers note that this method reflects the growth strategies of major tech firms in India, which often interrupts high monetization to first build scale and brand loyalty. If this subscription model succeeds, it could assist as a blueprint for AI rollouts in other emerging markets.
