In a historic event on Saturday, Charles III was formally proclaimed king and declared himself to be “fully aware” of the “duties and heavy responsibilities of sovereignty”.

The 73-year-old head of state pledged to follow his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away on Thursday at the age of 96, in the words of the Accession Council, a group of senior political and religious advisers.

Here is the full speech:

Lords, ladies, and gentlemen,

It is my most difficult responsibility to inform you of the passing of my cherished mother, The Queen.

It is the greatest comfort to me to know of the sympathy expressed by so many to my Sister and Brothers and that such overwhelming affection and support should be extended to our entire family in our loss. I know how deeply you, the entire Nation – and I think I may say the whole world – sympathise with me in the irreparable loss we have all suffered.

My mother set an example of unwavering love and unselfish service to our entire family, to this kingdom, and to the larger family of nations to which it belongs.

In terms of time, dedication, and devotion, my mother’s rule was unparalleled. We express our gratitude for this steadfast life even as we weep.

I am deeply aware of this significant bequest as well as the obligations and the responsibilities of Sovereignty that have been transferred to me. I will work hard to defend constitutional governance as a model for myself as I assume these duties and to promote the peace, harmony, and prosperity of the people of these Islands as well as those of the Commonwealth Realms and Territories around the globe.

In pursuing this goal, I am confident that I will have the support and allegiance of the peoples whose Sovereign I have been appointed to be, and that I will be advised by the advice of their elected parliaments as I carry out my duties. I find tremendous encouragement in all of this from my darling wife’s unwavering support.

I would like to take this opportunity to reaffirm my willingness and intention to carry on the custom of giving My Government the hereditary revenues, including the Crown Estate, in exchange for the Sovereign Grant, which supports My official duties as Head of State and Head of Nation, for the benefit of All.

And I pray to Almighty God for direction and assistance as I complete the difficult duty that has been placed upon me and to which I now dedicate the time that is left of my life.
