The Union Government on Friday announced to grant Rs 70,000 as monthly fellowship to 2,000 PhD scholars across IITs and IISc in the country.

Union Higher Education Secretary Kewal Kumar Sharma, who was at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur campus on Friday to attend the 67th Foundation Day function said that Rs. 70,000 will be given to all the PhD scholars in IITs and IISc as their monthly fellowship. This fellowship will be given for five years, reports PTI.

At present, there are 25,000 scholars enrolled in different PhD programmes in the IITs and those opting for doctoral degree directly after completing their Master’s get Rs 25,000 per month.

Sharma said that this initiative by the government will also enable meritorious researchers, keen to further their research but forced to opt for corporate jobs for higher pay, to pursue their goal.

“The cabinet nod for the proposal should come soon. We are hopeful to start it from the next session,” said Kewal Kumar Sharma.
