The 16th IIFA Awards were given away with much fanfare in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia as a star-studded three-day weekend came to an end. Hosts Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh’s camaraderie stole the show while it was Vishal Bharadwaj’s Haider which won the most awards. While everyone’s eyes were on the green carpet of the ceremonies and the main awards stage, we kept our eyes and ears open to get you some scoops from behind the scenes.
Shahid Kapoor had a lot to say about Haider and his energetic performance at the awards, but stayed mum when journalists probed him on his impending marriage. While speaking to NewsX, he said that he prefers to just smile and move on, when constantly probed on his nuptials.
Omung Kumar, who won the Best Debut director award for the biopic Mary Kom, chose the occasion to break the news on the casting for his next film, another biopic, this time on Sarabjit Singh’s life and tribulations in a Pakistani prison. Omung told NewsX that Aishwarya Rai Bachchan would play the role of Dalbir Kaur, Sarabjit’s sister ending speculation that he could pull in Priyanka Chopra for the part.
Hrithik Roshan, along with Anil Kapoor had the busiest schedule over the IIFA weekend, performing for his fans at a mall on Day 1, attending a signing event for his sister’s book on dad Rakesh Roshan on Day 2 and giving an electrifying performance at the awards on Day 3. It was good to see the actor in his element, after a temporary low phase post-divorce with Suzanne.
Anurag Kashyap, meanwhile seemed to not want to break his silence over the Bombay Velvet debacle choosing to not give a single sound-byte to the media despite attending all the events.
Ranveer Singh accumulated a lot of frequent flyer miles over the IIFA weekend, flying in to Malaysia to rehearse a day before the weekend began, flying back to Bangalore to attend Deepika Padukone’s father’s birthday and then flying back with her for the main awards night.
And speaking of Ranveer and Deepika, Ranveer sure seemed to profess his love publicly for Ms Padukone at the awards night, calling her the Queen of Hearts, proposing to her on his knees and also ending the proposal with Ram Chahe Leela, Leela Chahe Ram.
Priyanka Chopra surprised many by not coming for the main awards. Despite attending her film Dil Dhadakne Do’s grand premiere at IIFA , PC skipped the main awards function, though her mother was spotted on the green carpet.
Sajid Nadiadwala, meanwhile got us excited and hopeful as he said without giving a time-frame that the next film he directs will star the 3 Khans – Salman, Shahrukh and Aamir together.
Meanwhile, PK has been breaking boundaries to do phenomenally well in China, and both Rajkumar Hirani and Anushka Sharma were over the moon, when we spoke to them about it.
The IIFA weekend also saw several television announcements – Anupam Kher confirming the second season of The Anupam Kher show and Lisa Hayden and Anusha Dandekar telling informing NewsX that they will be part of India’s next Top Model which is all set to launch soon in India.
And finally, like last year, there was no announcement made of the host venue for next year, leaving us to wait and wonder where the gala spectacle will head to next.
