New Delhi: Anjali Ameer, a transsexual woman will be seen playing a lead role in a movie, thus creating a new chapter in the world of Indian cinema. The film is set to be released this year.

Malyalam actor Mammooty recommended Anjali’s name to the director for his upcoming feature.

Directed by Ram, the movie will be released in Tamil and Malyalam.

Anjali, who belongs to an orthodox Muslim family in Kerala’s Kozhikode, ran away when she faced rejection there. But the family soon started accepting her identity and now they are her greatest strength.

Model turned actress Anjali underwent a sex change surgery when she was 20. After that she started living with transgender communities in Coimbatore and Bengaluru in the next couple of years. It was a period of struggle and hardships, she told India Times.

“After completing my class 10th, I started trying to undergo this change. Initially, it wasn’t acceptable for my family. So, I ran away from home. I lived with transgender communities in Coimbatore and Bengaluru in the next couple of years. It was a period of real personal struggle,” Anjali said.

“Later, my family accepted me for who I am and wanted me to come back home. They have been supportive and they are my strength,” she added.
