Coming fresh from his latest triumph from the Bollywood movie ‘Newton’, actor Rajkummar Rao said that the praise he received for his movie which is now officially India’s entry for the foreign language film category at Oscars is all because of his mother’s blessings.
“Whatever good is happening with ‘Newton’ is because of my mom’s blessings. I really believe in that,” Rajkummar said in an interview.
The movie Newton, which is directed by Amit V Masurkar and Manish Mundra as the producer revolves around National Award-winning actor Nutan Kumar, who plays the role of Newton, a modest and humble government employee who is dispatched on election duty in a pro-Naxal town of Chattisgarh.
The film falls under the banner of The Drishyam Films had a world premiere at the 67th Berlin International Film Festival where it was graced with Art Cinema award in the Forum segment. The movie also won Best Film at the Hong Kong International Film Festival.
After winning big at the Hong Kong International Film Festival, Rajkumar said, “Winning in Berlinale, in Hong Kong and then to get such an amazing response, reviews and now to be India’s official entry for Oscars… My mother is right up there and keeping a check on me. Her blessings are always going to be with me, I know.”
“I absolutely believe she’s my guiding star,” said the 33-year-old actor who was shooting for ‘Newton’ in March last year at a time when he received the news of his mother’s demise.
Rajkumar, who introduced himself from a highly talked about Bollywood movie ‘Love Sex Aur Dhokha’ strongly believes that the ‘Indianness’ of the movie Newton is something that makes it stand out and he hopes that the movie goes further in the Oscar race.
“I’m happy people saw that Indianness in ‘Newton’. It has a global appeal and it’s so universal in nature, but still so rooted and grounded (in India),” said the actor.
For Rajkummar, before ‘Newton’ was ‘Bareilly Ki Barfi’, which helped him receiving significant applause for being a versatile actor.
“My process of choosing scripts remains the same. Of whatever I read and whatever excites me is what I will continue to take up,” Rajkummar revealed.
In comparison to being the modern day Naseeruddin Shah, Rajkummar replied in a humble manner and said, “Naseer sir is one of the finest actors of our country. We have only one Naseeruddin Shah and we are very proud of him.”
