Vijay’s next film Mersal is all set to hit the theaters next week. Although there were reports of the release getting delayed due to the ongoing battle over double taxation in Tamil Nadu between the Tamil Film Producer’s council and government, the makers are however making all essential arrangements to ensure that the film releases to shatter all box office records. Hema Rukmani, director Thenandal Studios Limited, the makers of Mersal, on Tuesday took to twitter to announce that the film has been confirmed to release in 3292 screens worldwide, making it the biggest release for a Tamil movie. Blockbusters Baahubali 2 and Mahesh Babu’s Spyder were earlier were the biggest Tamil releases.

The film is releasing in record number of places in several places. In Kerala, it’s releasing in 350 screens, surpassing the previous record of 320 screens by Baahubali 2. In Malaysia, which is a Tamil dominant market, it’s set to open in 800 screens. Directed by Atlee, Mersal is his second time collaboration with Vijay after last year’s blockbuster film Theri. In the film, Vijay plays triple role and he is paired with Kajal Aggarwal, Nithya Menen and Samantha Ruth Prabhu. Actor-filmmaker SJ Suryah, who impressed audiences and critics alike as a menacing villain in Spyder, plays the antagonist in this film.

Estimated to be made on a high budget of Rs 130 crore, Mersal is the most expensive film in Vijay’s career, replacing his action-adventure flick Puli, made on a budget of Rs 100 crore. What needs to be seen is whether Mersal, given its very high budget, can make it big at the box-office or not. The film has been dubbed in Telugu as Adhirindi, and it will have a simultaneous release with its Tamil version. It has music by double Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman.

Baahubali 2: The Conclusion was theatrically released over 9000 screens worldwide on 28 April 2017. Baahubali 2 was the first Telugu film to be released in 4K High Definition format. It is estimated that close to 200 screens were upgraded to 4K projectors before the release date of the movie.
