KPop Demon Hunters Director Maggie Kang Reveals Her Patriotic Side, Tells President Lee Jae Myung, ‘Wanted To Do Something For My Country’

On 20 August 2025, Maggie Kang, director of KPop Demon Hunters appeared on K-Pop: The Next Chapter program, where she met South Korean President Lee Jae Myung. The event was also attended by members of TWICE, Jihyo and Jeongyeon,. The main idea of the event was to discuss how K-pop affects the world and Korean culture globally. Where Kang shared, “I wanted to show our culture as it is, without hiding anything,”

KPop Demon Hunters: A Cultural Landmark That Conquered the World

In June 2025, KPop Demon Hunters was released on Netflix and quickly became the streaming giant’s most popular animated film; in fact, it is positioned second on the entire Netflix movie list.

From the pair of Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, the animated film follows K-pop girl group Huntr/x, secretly battling demons while blending high-energy choreography with Korean mythology. Its vibrant visuals and soundtracks, including the chart-topping TWICE “Take Down”, captivated global audiences with the authentic cultural elements.

Kang’s vision is rooted in her Korean heritage in celebrating the infectious energy of K-pop and the rich folklore of Korea, making the animated film an ambassador of culture.

President Lee’s Vision: Korea’s Culture Over the World

During the K-Pop: The Next Chapter program of Arirang TV, President Lee proclaimed in the importance of soft power, “If we can make a big push in terms of becoming among the top five soft-power nations in the world, that would be really something.”

He described KPop Demon Hunters as a “new source of national strength” and pledged that the field of culture should be transformed into a core industry. Lee inspired “arm’s length” government support while avoiding much interference so that creativity and cross-national association can prosper.

His statements emphasised the need for substantial infrastructure to sustain the K-pop phenomenon as a global giant, while lessons learned in the program would inform future policy efforts. 

Cultural Pride and Future Aspirations of Maggie Kang

Kang narrated that she was proud to show Korean culture faithfully, she recalled her early memories while she was in Canada, “When a teacher asked me about my hometown, I said ‘South Korea,’ but they couldn’t find it on the map. That’s when I realized I wanted to do something for my country,” she said.  Kang’s appearance on You Quiz on the Block further shared her vision, inspiring creators to push Korean content’s boundaries.
