G7 Summit Canada Live: Leaders from the Group of Seven (G7) nations convened in Canada on Monday for their annual talks, as the ongoing wars in Ukraine and the Middle East continue to intensify. US President Donald Trump, during the summit, expressed his belief that Russia’s expulsion from the former Group of Eight (G8) was a critical mistake.

G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta

The G7, which includes leaders from Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the US, as well as representatives from the European Union, are meeting in Kananaskis, a resort area in the Canadian Rockies. The summit is scheduled to last until Tuesday.

Canada, holding the current G7 presidency, is hosting the summit this year. Traditionally, the host country invites leaders from other key nations, deemed important for global economic and political affairs. This year, Canada has extended invitations to India, Saudi Arabia, Ukraine, and several others.

Past G7 Summit Tensions with US President Trump

Prime Minister Carney likely hoped to avoid a repeat of the contentious 2018 summit, also held in Canada. That year, Trump refused to sign the final communique—a statement that G7 nations typically issue to demonstrate unity—and left the meeting early. Trump’s departure followed his public criticism of then-Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, whom he labelled “very dishonest and weak.”

Donald Trump disrupted the 2017 G7 summit in Italy by objecting to the climate change section in the final communique. A year later, he withdrew his support from the 2018 statement altogether, following a public spat with then-Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who hosted the summit.

This year, leaders of the world’s wealthiest nations are set to begin arriving Sunday in Kananaskis, a resort town nestled in the Canadian Rockies of Alberta.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Attend

At the invitation of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the G7 Summit in Kananaskis on June 16 and 17. This will mark Modi’s sixth consecutive participation in the G7 summit.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Modi is expected to engage with G7 leaders, invited outreach countries, and heads of international organisations to discuss critical global issues. Key topics on the agenda include energy security, advancements in technology and innovation, with a particular focus on the nexus between artificial intelligence and energy, as well as quantum-related developments.

She added, “We have a President who...
