Delhi’s swine flu situation has taken a sharp turn for the worse, with the city logging 138 fresh H1N1 cases in just one day. The latest numbers have pushed the capital’s H1N1 count for the year to 2,446, while the total Influenza-A tally across the city now stands at 3,177.

Health Department Holds Emergency Review

Health Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh held a virtual review meeting with medical directors and superintendents from government hospitals to check how prepared the system is right now. The discussion covered bed availability, testing facilities, medicine stocks, emergency response and whether hospitals have enough staff on hand. As part of the preparedness measures, hospitals have been directed to keep at least five isolation beds free at all times, while larger facilities have been told to set aside ten or more beds specifically for influenza and vector borne disease patients.

A Sharp Jump From Last Year

What makes this year’s numbers striking is the comparison with last year. During the same period in 2025, Delhi had recorded just 229 H1N1 cases, which means this year’s figures are running nearly eight times higher. Health data also shows H1N1 remains the dominant strain within the city’s Influenza-A cases, with a smaller share coming from H1, H3 and other Influenza-A variants.

What’s Driving The Numbers?

Doctors are quick to point out that H1N1 itself isn’t new. It’s the same strain that caused the global pandemic back in 2009 and has since become part of the regular seasonal flu cycle. What’s worrying officials this time isn’t the virus changing but simply how many people are getting infected during the ongoing monsoon season, a period that typically sees a rise in respiratory illnesses anyway. The Union Health Ministry has advised anyone showing flu-like symptoms to get checked early, especially if those symptoms don’t go away or start getting worse.

Symptoms And Precautions To Keep In Mind

As for what to watch out for, common symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, chills and general fatigue, though not every patient shows all of these and fever doesn’t always show up. People are being urged to avoid close contact with others while unwell, keep up with hand and respiratory hygiene, make sure indoor spaces are well ventilated, and consider getting a seasonal flu shot, particularly if they fall into a higher risk category.

With the tally already past 2,400 and still climbing, Delhi’s hospitals are being told to stay on alert as the city continues moving through the rest of the monsoon season.
