With swine flu cases climbing this season, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has issued a public advisory listing out the symptoms people should watch for. In a post shared on X under the National Health Mission, the ministry said swine flu, caused by the H1N1 virus, can present through fever, cough, sore throat, headache, runny nose, body aches and fatigue. The advisory urged citizens to recognise the signs early and avoid brushing off persistent symptoms, adding that anyone experiencing these should seek medical advice at their nearest healthcare centre without delay.

A Familiar Pattern During Monsoon

Speaking to ANI on the subject, Dr Randeep Guleria, Chairman of Internal Medicine, Respiratory and Sleep Medicine at Medanta Gurugram, put the current spike into perspective. He noted that India had already witnessed a major H1N1 outbreak back in 2009, and that cases tend to rise every year during the monsoon months. According to him, the numbers this year are indeed somewhat higher than usual, but he was clear that this isn’t cause for alarm.

Doctor Explains Why Most Cases Stay Mild

Dr Guleria explained that the majority of swine flu cases tend to be mild, typically involving fever, sore throat and cough, and often resolve on their own without major intervention. He did point out that body aches and cough can sometimes linger for a few weeks even after the fever subsides. However, he flagged that certain groups, particularly the elderly and those with existing health vulnerabilities, may require hospitalisation if the illness progresses. Despite this, he reiterated that the disease remains largely self-limiting in nature, concluding that there is no reason for the public to panic.

What The Advisory Means For The Public?

Taken together, the government’s public health messaging and the doctor’s clinical assessment point to the same broad takeaway: stay alert to the symptoms without overreacting to them. The ministry’s advisory serves as a reminder that early recognition, rather than fear, is what helps prevent complications, especially for people with underlying conditions who are more susceptible to a severe course of the illness.
