BJP candidate Debangshu Panda secured a massive victory in the Falta assembly repoll on Sunday, winning by a margin of more than one lakh votes in what is being seen as a major political setback for the Trinamool Congress in a constituency once considered its organisational stronghold. The result from Falta has quickly turned into a larger political message for West Bengal politics, coming just days after the BJP ended the TMC’s 15-year rule in the state and formed its first government under Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. The Falta repoll was ordered by the Election Commission after allegations of “irregularities” during the earlier phase of polling in the West Bengal Assembly elections.
According to reports, Debangshu Panda polled 1,49,666 votes in Falta, comfortably defeating CPI(M) candidate Sambhu Nath Kurmi, who secured 40,645 votes. Congress candidate Abdur Razzak Molla finished third with 10,084 votes, while TMC nominee Jahangir Khan slipped to fourth position with only 7,783 votes.
Jahangir Khan had announced his withdrawal from the Falta contest before the repoll took place, but his name still remained on the ballot among the candidates. The repoll in Falta was conducted on May 21 after the Election Commission flagged serious concerns regarding polling irregularities.
The huge margin in Falta has surprised many political observers because the constituency was earlier projected by the TMC as part of its strong “Diamond Harbour model”.
Speaking to ANI during counting, Debangshu Panda thanked the people of Falta for supporting the BJP in large numbers and called the victory a blessing from voters.
“Eighteen rounds of counting have been done, and we are leading by a margin of 92,000. Three rounds are remaining…I want to thank the people of Falta,” Panda said while counting was still underway.
As counting progressed, the lead widened even further and eventually crossed one lakh votes. The CPI(M) candidate remained in second place by a distant margin throughout the counting process, while Congress stayed in third position.
The Falta result has become politically significant because it came immediately after the BJP scripted a historic victory in West Bengal by winning 207 seats and forming its first-ever government in the state. The BJP leadership is now viewing the Falta repoll result as proof that support for the party continues to grow even in areas once considered difficult for it electorally.
What was once expected to be a local repoll in Falta has now turned into a larger political moment, with the BJP using the victory to strengthen its message that the political balance in West Bengal has shifted dramatically after the Assembly elections.
