The Indian Space Research Organisation is moving towards structural transformations in India’s space sector, with the private sector set to take a larger role in manufacturing launch vehicles and routine satellites. The transition is already underway, with the ISRO expected to increasingly focus on research, advanced technologies, scientific missions and space infrastructure.
Private Sector to Take Over Manufacturing
The development was highlighted by IN-SPACe Chairman Dr Pawan Goenka at Business Today’s India @ 100 Economy Summit. He said routine manufacturing of rockets and satellites is moving towards private industry, while ISRO’s role will increasingly resemble that of a research and development organisation rather than a manufacturer handling the entire space programme.
SSLV, PSLV and LVM3 in Privatisation Push
The Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) has already moved into this transition. Its technology and production rights have been transferred to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited following a bidding process. Goenka also said the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) and Launch Vehicle Mark-3 (LVM3) are headed towards greater private-sector participation.
ISRO to Focus on Research and Advanced Missions
The government is also planning to hand operations of a new launch centre to private industry. The broader strategy is aimed at expanding India’s space economy from around $8 billion currently to $44 billion by 2033, with private companies expected to play a much larger role in manufacturing, launch services and other commercial space activities.
