A wet spell held on across large stretches of the country this Thursday, September 3, with the IMD warning that Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and several other states are in for heavy to very heavy rain over the next few days. Delhi and Mumbai, though, had things easier, waking up to a fairly pleasant morning even as the weather stayed messy elsewhere. The capital can expect a mostly cloudy day with light rain in many pockets and the odd spell of moderate showers, with the mercury likely to settle somewhere between 32 and 34 degrees Celsius. That said, Delhi isn’t off the hook for long. The IMD has forecast fairly widespread to widespread rain over the city, along with Haryana and Chandigarh, on September 3 and 4, and isolated heavy showers could keep going all the way through to the 5th.
Uttar Pradesh’s Flood Situation Remains Serious
Things are far more grim in Uttar Pradesh, where the flood situation has stayed serious. So far, 16,784 people have been evacuated to safety, including 3,042 rescued on Wednesday alone, and 23 of the 35 flood-affected districts remain impacted. Three deaths have been reported in rain-related incidents. The IMD expects west UP to keep receiving fairly widespread to widespread rain through September 5, while east UP braces for another spell on the 6th and 7th, with isolated very heavy rain likely there and very heavy rain possible in west UP on September 2-3. Prayagraj, Varanasi, Ghazipur, Ballia, Lakhimpur Kheri, Pilibhit, Chitrakoot and Sonbhadra remain among the worst-hit. In Pilibhit, swelling Sharda, Deoha and Khakra rivers have hit several villages, and the Khakra bridge going underwater has cut off around 18 villages.
Madhya Pradesh And Beyond
Madhya Pradesh is another flashpoint, with widespread rain forecast across the east and west of the state through September 8, and isolated extremely heavy rain possible in east MP on September 2-3. Overnight rain had already left parts of Sidhi waterlogged, and the IMD has now flagged a low to moderate flash-flood risk for Sidhi, Rewa, Singrauli, Satna and Jabalpur, along with Mirzapur, Prayagraj, Sonbhadra and Chitrakoot over in UP. The rain isn’t sparing the east either, with heavy to very heavy showers likely over Bihar, Gangetic West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Assam and Meghalaya. Meanwhile, Konkan, Goa and parts of Maharashtra stay on watch for the rest of the week.
Alerts Issued Nationwide
A red alert is currently in force for east Madhya Pradesh and parts of Uttarakhand, while an orange alert covers west UP, Vidarbha, Uttarakhand, sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim. On top of that, a yellow alert has been sounded for west MP, east UP, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, Assam, Odisha, Karnataka, Telangana and Jammu and Kashmir. Authorities have cautioned that the rain could bring waterlogging and flooding in several spots, along with disruptions to road, rail and flight schedules.
