Chitragupta Puja is celebrated a day after the festival of lights and it also marks the end of the 5 days long Diwali festival. This festival also coincides with Bhai Dooj, Bhai Beej, Bhai Phota and Bhai Teeka. The festival falls on the lunar day of Shukla Paksha in the Vikram Samvat calendar month of Kartik. The festival is also known as Kalam-Dawaat Puja. Lord Chitragupta is one of the key deity according to the Hindu Mythology as Chitragupta Maharaj keeps a record of all good and evil deeds of humans and accordingly decides hell or heaven for the person.
Chitragupta Puja Significance: As Chitragupta is the God that keeps tracks of all the good and evil deeds of humans, people worship him on this day so that they can please him and get absolution from all the sins and therefore pave a way to heaven. This puja is primarily celebrated by Kayasthas, who believe in learning, teaching, peace, knowledge, justice and literacy, the virtues depicted by Chitragupta Maharaj. The puja is also referred to as Dawaat Puja and people worship pens and books symbolizing the importance of studies. People also give details of their earning and expenditure to Chitragupta Maharaj and ask him for additional money to run the household efficiently next year.
Chitragupta Puja Vidhi:
Clean the place of worship after taking bath in the morning. Offer a flower necklace and flowers to the idol or photo of Lord Chitragupta. Pray to the Hindu deity to forgive your sins and grant you heaven after death. Write the name of five Hindu Gods on a white piece of paper and offer it to Lord Chitragupta. On the same piece of paper write the incomes and expenditure of the previous year and offer them to the deity and ask him for additional money for a smooth financial year ahead.
Chitragupta Puja Timings:
The ‘Abhijit Muhurat’ of the Puja is between 11:48 am to 1 pm on Saturday, whereas Amrit Kaal is between 02:49 am to 04:33 am on 22 October 2017.
