Guru Nanak Birthday or Guru Nanak Jayanti is the birth anniversary celebration of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first Sikh guru. Guru Nanak enlightened the entire world with his deep and philosophical religious teachings; this is the reason this day is also celebrated as ‘Prakash Utsav’. It falls in the month of Kartik of the Hindu Calendar. This festival is celebrated by Sikhs all around the world with loads of zeal and happiness. The word Gurpurab is made from two words Gur, which means the Guru or the master, and Purab, that comes from the Hindi word parv meaning day, so it is ‘the day associated with the guru’.

Guru Nanak’s birthday is celebrated on full moon day of Kartik month or Kartik Poornima. This year, followers of Guru Nanak will celebrate the 549th Prakash Parv or Guru Nanak Jayanti on November 4. The announcement about the event was made through a procession called Nagar Kirtan taken out on November 1 from the gurdwara at Budhaji Nagar to the one at Ramdaspeth. Baba Guru Nanak Dev, the first guru of Sikhs, holds the highest position among the 10 gurus worshipped by the community. Guru Nanak was the first of the 10 Sikh Gurus and was born in 1469.
