As the heat picks up, coconut water and sugarcane juice are still the two drinks most Indian households reach for, both sold as natural ways to cool off. But which one is actually better for you comes down to who’s drinking it, and how much.

What Sugarcane Juice Offers?

Sugarcane juice gives an instant energy boost, thanks mostly to its natural sugar content, and it also helps replace electrolytes lost through sweat. It has polyphenols too, which act as antioxidants, plus a bit of dietary fibre that aids digestion. Dietitian and weight management expert Dr Pratyaksh Bhardwaj says it’s best had around three to four times a week, not more. The sugar levels can send blood sugar shooting up, so it’s not something people with diabetes should be drinking. Have it too often and it can also start adding to your weight.

What Does Coconut Water Provide?

In general, coconut water appears to be a more moderate alternative between the two. This drink is low in calories, less sweet, and contains electrolytes that include potassium and sodium. In addition, there are small quantities of B vitamins that promote metabolism and vitamin C. However, there are researchers who deny the benefits of this drink being a miracle cure for hydration because, for the majority of people, water serves this function on a daily basis perfectly well.

So, Which One Is Better To Choose?

Most of the scientists agree about one fact: neither of the beverages should replace water. If you need an energy boost, you may try sugarcane juice as long as it will not become your everyday drink. If you want a healthy alternative and try to lose some extra pounds, go for coconut water instead of sugarcane juice. Moreover, if you suffer from diabetes or need to reduce the intake of sugar, it is better to avoid sugarcane juice.
