Most Indian families cannot have a proper meal without including both roti and rice. However, this combination of foods has been a matter of discussion among the Indian population because there are debates regarding its adverse effects on health.

Why This Combination Causes Concern?

The first reason why this combination is considered harmful to health is based on the nature of the foods involved. Both roti and rice are mainly carbohydrates and when consumed together, the amount of carbs doubles. As a result, one may experience an increased consumption of calories during a meal due to high carbohydrates. Also, some people tend to suffer from bloating and indigestion since the body is supposed to digest a higher amount of carbohydrates at one time.

Blood Glucose Level Issues

Another major issue about this combination of foods is related to blood glucose level. In particular, white rice has a relatively high glycemic index and therefore, causes a relatively fast increase in the glucose levels in the blood. Combining this food with roti makes the issue even worse. It is recommended that people suffering from diabetes should not combine roti and rice in one meal because of this issue.

Not All Doom and Gloom

However, there are some nutritional benefits of each food despite the warnings. Firstly, roti made from wheat can supply the body with fiber and contain zinc, which has been shown to promote strong bones, enhance cognitive function, improve eyesight, and prevent gallstones. Second, rice promotes proper digestion and energy production and does not irritate the stomach as much as some other foods. As nutritionists say, consuming these two foods together will not do much harm as long as portions are kept under control and there is enough protein and vegetables in the dish.

So, Do You Have to Give It Up?

In general, it is safe for healthy people to occasionally consume roti and rice combined in moderate amounts. If you are on a diet and/or want to avoid a high glycemic index, it might be better to pay attention to the quantity of food consumed or eat these foods separately, but not put them both in one plate.
