Canadians are preparing to vote in an election that has drastically changed in recent months. The Conservatives are hoping to end the Liberals’ two-term leadership, which began with former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Liberal leader and current Prime Minister Mark Carney is emphasizing his central banking background to address threats from Donald Trump’s tariffs, while Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre is blaming previous Liberal governance for Canada’s economic vulnerability to hostile U.S. trade policies.
Polling staggered across six time zones will begin at 7 am local time (7:30 pm IST).
According to Nanos Research, when Trudeau announced his resignation, the Conservatives led with 47% popularity compared to the Liberals at 20%.
However, a recent three-day poll ending April 26 shows the Liberal Party regaining its lead, with a 4-point national advantage and a 6-point lead in Ontario, the country’s most crucial province, which holds 122 of the 343 parliamentary seats.
Elections Canada has stated that most ballots will be counted on election night. As per an AP report, each polling station manually counts the votes on election day and sends the results to the local Elections Canada office, which then uploads the data to the official Elections Canada website.
The first set of results is expected to be released by 10 am IST on April 29.
The initial polls have closed in Canada's election, marking the end of voting in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island. Polls have also closed in Newfoundland and sections of Labrador.
