RG Kar Rape And Murder Case Live: No Death Penalty For Convict Sanjay Roy
The Sealdah Sessions Court on Monday, January 20, will pronounce sentence to the convict, Sanjay Roy, in the heinous rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor who met her death at Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in December last year. Roy was convicted by Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das on January 18, 2025.
The incident, which occurred on August 9, 2024, sparked widespread outrage across India. The young doctor was found dead in a seminar room at the hospital, triggering widespread protests by junior doctors for justice and proper security arrangements at government hospitals. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which took over the case after the trial, has asked for “maximum punishment” for Roy. He is accused of rape and murder. The court is likely to award a death sentence or life imprisonment.
