Chhath Puja 2025 Live Updates: 4-Day Mahaparv Begins with Nahay Khay, Kharna, Surya Arghya, Vrat Paran, Sunrise & Sunset Timings, Rituals, Geet, and Wishes Across Bihar, UP & Delhi NCR

As the four-day Chhath Puja celebrations began on Saturday, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) announced an allocation of ₹40,000 per ward to improve lighting at ghats across the Capital’s 250 wards.

Mayor Sardar Raja Iqbal Singh, who inspected preparations in Shalimar Bagh and Pitampura, said the goal is to ensure safety and comfort for devotees, especially during evening rituals.

The MCD has also deployed special sanitation teams and strengthened arrangements for cleanliness, drainage, fogging, and waste management, while urging citizens to avoid plastic use and maintain hygiene at the ghats.

Ahead of Chhath Puja celebrations on October 27–28, the Lucknow Traffic Police has announced traffic diversions near Laxman Mela Ground. Key rituals include Sandhya Arghya and Kosi filling on October 27, followed by Suryoday Arghya on October 28. 

Traffic will be regulated from 12 noon on October 27 and again from 3 am on October 28 until the end of the festivities. 

Diversions will affect major routes in Hazratganj, including Chiraiyajheel, Sikandar Bagh, Rana Pratap Marg, and Clark Avadh intersections, with alternate routes provided for smooth vehicular movement.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced October 27, the main day of Chhath Puja, as a government holiday. She highlighted the festival’s significance in celebrating faith, devotion, and harmony with nature. The government has also ensured cleanliness, safety, and essential facilities at over 1,300 Chhath ghats across the Capital to help devotees perform rituals peacefully.

Celebrate Chhath Puja 2025 with the right timings! This year, the festival begins on Monday, October 27, 2025. Key moments include Sunrise at 6:30 AM and Sunset at 5:40 PM. The Shashthi Tithi starts at 6:04 AM on October 27 and ends at 7:59 AM on October 28, guiding devotees through the sacred rituals with precision.

From dawn prayers to riverside rituals, Sharda Sinha’s voice has become synonymous with the spirit of Chhath Puja. During pregnancy, the body requires sufficient nutrition and hydration, so observing a waterless (nirjala) fast can be harmful.
If you still wish to keep the fast, you can follow a phalahar (fruit-based) fast instead.

Eat light fruits like bananas, apples, or sweet limes throughout the day.

To prevent dehydration, keep drinking fluids such as coconut water, lemon water, or milk.

This helps maintain energy levels and prevents weakness.

However, it is generally advised that pregnant women should avoid observing the Chhath fast, as health is the top priority.

In most festivals, a priest or purohit is required to perform rituals and conduct the worship, but Chhath Puja is different. This festival does not need any specific mantras or elaborate rituals. Chhath Puja is entirely based on devotion, faith, and purity.

During this festival, the devotee (vrati) acts as both the priest and the worshipper, performing all the rituals themselves. From Nahay-Khay to Kharna, the evening offering (Sandhya Arghya), and the morning offering (Pratahkalin Arghya), every stage is guided purely by faith and devotion. It is this simplicity and spirit of surrender that make Chhath Puja one of the most sacred and unique festivals.

Proper Method of Kharna Puja

Wake up early in the morning on the day of Kharna and thoroughly clean the house.

After cleaning, take a bath and wear clean and comfortable clothes.

Perform the morning prayers and rituals, and in the evening, take another bath and wear new or freshly washed clothes.

In some households, women wear a dhoti in the style of a saree; this depends on family tradition.

Light a fire using mango wood and prepare the prasad (offering/meal).

Once the prasad is ready, first offer it to Goddess Chhathi Maiya.

After completing the worship, the devotee (vrati) should sit there for a while and meditate on the Goddess.

Devotees celebrated Kharna Puja on 26th October 2025. On this day, gur (jaggery) kheer and roti as prasad. 

Devotees can follow the Chhath Kharna Puja vidhi for prosperity and wealth: 

• Wake up early and clean the entire house. 
• take a bath and wear clean and fresh clothes. 
• perform the rituals and worship the Chhath Mahaparv. 
• in evening, take another bath and wear clean clothes.

During Chhath Puja, several items made of bamboo are used, among which the soop (bamboo basket) is considered the most important. The soop is regarded as an essential part of Surya Puja because the ritual is considered incomplete without it. While offering Arghya (water oblation) to the Sun God, the soop is used. It is filled with fruits, thekua, and other offerings, which are dedicated to Lord Surya with devotion. This soop is not only a tool for worship, but also a symbol of devotion and tradition.

Day 2 – October 26, 2025 (Sunday)

Time: Evening time, preferably just before sunset (exact local time varies by location) 

Devotees offer Arghya to the Sun as he is setting at the ghats, along with singing Chhath Geet songs and offering thekua, fruits, and coconuts to the Sun. This is the third day of Chhath Puja.

Date: October 25, 2025 (Saturday)

Time: Early hours of the morning (generally before sunrise)

Devotees take holy dips in rivers or ponds, clean their homes, and eat satvik (vegetarian) food on this day. This day is considered the first day of the four-day Chhath celebration. The ceremony is called Nahay Khay, which denotes the first day of Chhath Puja. Nahay Khay means “holy bathing” and signifies the start of Chhath. This ceremony signifies purification and devotion to the Sun and symbolizes the beginning of Chhath.

For observance of Chhath Puja devotees are needed to adhere to all of the key niyam (rules and guidelines):

• Cleanliness: Houses and ghats neded to be cleaned well.
• Satvik Food: Only pure vegetarian food, no onion or garlic or non-veg calls for a notational commitment in upperworld becoming asuch that nothing a natur arrives in the prepared things of a devotee.
• Fasting: One needed to observe fasting rules rigidly, especially on Kharna day and Arghya day. 

During Chhath Puja 2025 a lot of devotees were also seen performing the Shivling puja to get blessings from Lord Shiva in addition to Surya Dev and Chhathi Maiya. It has all rituals of offering with water, milk, bilva leaves, and flower petals while chanting mantras. The puja is known to bring prosperity, health and spiritual strength to celebrate this special four-day long festival.

Families gather together to share and break the vrat with festive prasad.  

After near 36 hours of the long nirjala fast, everyone enjoys breaking the fast through fruits, sweets, and distilling that precious moment with water and prasad. Families hug one another while sharing in sentimentality to one another by wishing each other well on Chhath Puja and expressing sentiments of thanks and appreciation. “Pray for balance and togetherness with this Chhath Puja!”​

Final morning offerings and prayers on October 28 at 6:30 AM.

On the final day, families rise early and assemble along the riverbanks to offer water and fruits (and sometimes thekua) to the sun rising above the horizon. After the sunrise arghya, families break their fast (vrat) with prasad and blessing to wishing one another, “May the first rays of the sun fill your home with happiness.”​

No Plastic! Accepting nothing but clay diyas and biodegradable things. 

Devotee communities ensure the river bank never looks dirty, and there is zero trash on the river banks. The local authorities prohibit any plastic across major ghats. With volunteers’ help, families will clean as they go while volunteers pass out earthen lamps. “Celebrate with the Nature, celebrate with joy!”

Pregnant women can observe Chhath Puja vrat with care and devotion. They may:

• Avoid strict fasting or modify it with light, nutritious meals.
• Participate in rituals like Nahay Khay, Kharna, and Arghya without overexertion.
• Focus on prayers, aartis, and offerings to Surya Dev and Chhathi Maiya.
• Ensure rest and hydration, keeping health as a priority.

This allows expectant mothers to join the festival spiritually while maintaining safety for themselves and their baby.

Women who are menstruating can participate respectfully in Chhath Puja. On Nahay-Khay day Woman may:

1. Take a holy bath, participating in a mental and spiritual purification.

2. Prepare and provide satvik meals without touching the main puja items.

3. Participate in the prayers during Nahay-Khay without Arghya by participating in the devotion and blessings.

Devotees to the Chhath Puja festival can conduct all rituals as they wish, without Purohit. The heart and soul of Chhatth Puja are personal devotion, personal discipline and sincerity, and personal devotion to prayers to Surya Dev and Chhathi Maiya. Families can arrange meals, do the reciting of the aartis, and anything else they choose in their home or the ghats. It is simple, and made simple and accessible to all.

Police, medical staff, and a team from the city are there to help keep the festival secure.

Authorities in UP, Bihar, and Delhi organized medical camps, injuries, generators, water tanks, and a clean-up initiative to ensure the festival goes off without a hitch. “May Chhath Puja bring security to all celebrations!”​

• This ritual sets the tone for the next three days of fasting, prayers, and offerings.

The four-day Chhath Puja 2025 has started! Devotees in Bihar, UP, Jharkhand, and Delhi NCR are celebrating with prayers and rituals. Ghats are decorated with diyas, flowers, and bamboo baskets, and people are preparing offerings.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced October 27, 2025, as a holiday for government offices, coinciding with the third day of the Chhath Puja. This is in order for fans of the festival, especially from the Purvanchal region, to prepare and participate in the various rituals and prayers. The delhi government and local administration worked to plan for approximately 1,300 pre-scheduled ghats along with cleaning both the river and other bodies of water for safe and organized celebrations across the capital.

Devotees pray waist deep in the water, offering the mula, fruits, and thekua to the setting sun at 5:40 PM.

This deliberately intense ritual brings ghats filled with devotees praying and chanting for family, health, success, and the blessings of Surya Dev and Chhathi Maiya. “May faith light your evenings!”​

Chhath geet and prayers signify the beginning of the festival.

Women sing traditional folk songs like “Kaanch Hi Baans Ke Bahangiya,” “Uga Hai Suruj Dev,” and “Dulha Ke Ghar Chhathi Maiya”, while the rhythm continues on their drums. Families create bamboo soops filled with Thekua, fruits, coconut, and diyas for offerings. As the songs echo along the ghats, devotees believe: “Let each of your songs deliver your message to the divine!”

The major ghats in Patna, Noida, Delhi NCR, and Varanasi are prepared for the evening prayers. 

They will be filled with lamps, marigold flowers, and brightly decorated soops, and the Sandhya Arghya, main offering of the evening to the setting Sun, will take place at 5:40 PM on October 27. May Surya Dev shower his rays of prosperity!

After sunset, the devotees will first offer the dessert and banana to Chhathi Maiya (the goddess of Chhath) then to family and friends to enjoy giving prasad while being considerate and simple with their. “We wish a blessed Kharna to all families!”

The following day, October 26, the second day of the worship ceremony, Kharna, is again celebrated as a nirjala vrat—food and water are not consumed until the sun sets (5:41 PM). Devotees will prepare a vegan dessert (e.g., jaggery kheer, roti, bananas, etc.) and grant prasad on the evening of Kharna, initiating another 36- hour long fast. Devotees wish, “May your devotion bring health and happiness!”  

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extends his wishes for a Happy Chhath Puja 2025 and points out the occasion’s significance in India as a celebration of simplicity, restraint, and dedication to God. In his post, PM Modi says:

“The four-day long Chhath festival begins today with the sacred rituals of bathing and eating. My heartfelt greetings to devotees across the country, including Bihar. My salutations and respect to all those observing the fast!”

PM Modi has asked everyone to consider sharing songs dedicated to Chhathi Maiya saying they are great demonstrations of devotion and heritage. He has promised to share music over the next few days to promote and highlight the cultural matters at stake with Chhath Puja 2025.

As the four days of Chhath take place, PM Modi thoughts and celebrations will travel through India and highlight the cultural and spiritual vitality of the Chhath Puja 2025.

Riverbanks and ghats are bustling with faith. Devotees light diyas, offer aarti and chant prayers that arise with the sun. Nearby markets provide puja essentials, fruits and sweets to festival goers. “Wishing everyone this Chhath Puja will bless each home with light and happiness.”

The Nahay Khay meal is being prepared with no onion or garlic, all ingredients serve fresh and pure. Families sit together for one meal before the fasting begins, everybody enjoyed seasonal vegetables and shared sweets. “Wishing everyone a happy start to Chhath Mahaparv!.

The first day of Chhath Puja, called Nahay Khay, began in the morning at sunrise (6:28 AM, Oct 25). People washed their home, washed utensils, dressed in new clothes, and started to prepare their pure vegetarian meals of lauki (evening gourd), arwa rice, and chana dal cooked on wooden stoves.
