George Linde tried to go down fighting, smashing back-to-back boundaries—a drilled four through extra cover followed by another over the infield. But Ferguson had the final say. He banged in a short ball that cramped Linde for room, and the mistimed pull went straight to Cole McConchie at long-on, who completed a simple catch. South Africa were bowled out shortly after, as New Zealand wrapped up a dominant win to level the series, completing a strong comeback after the first game.

New Zealand completely dismantled South Africa in the death overs, reducing them to 99/9 after 15 overs. Lockie Ferguson triggered the collapse in the 14th over with two wickets in two balls, dismissing Keshav Maharaj and Nqobani Mokoena, leaving South Africa reeling at 92/9 after 14 overs. In the next over, Kyle Jamieson kept things tight despite a lone six from George Linde. Linde tried to fight back with some big hitting, but lacked support from the other end as wickets had already fallen in a heap. With just 7 runs coming off the 15th over, South Africa limped to 99/9 after 15 overs, staring at a heavy defeat with only one wicket remaining.

One-sided game we are seeing! 

A disastrous over for South Africa as Ben Sears ripped through the middle order, leaving them at 91/7 after 13 overs. He picked up two crucial wickets in the over, first dismissing Dian Forrester, who was caught by Lockie Ferguson, and then removing Gerald Coetzee, caught by Cole McConchie. Just 5 runs came off the over as New Zealand struck at the right time, halting South Africa’s brief recovery and putting them firmly on the back foot.

South Africa’s innings swung both ways between overs 10 and 12, reaching 86/5 after 12 overs. Mitchell Santner struck again in the 11th over, dismissing Jason Smith to leave the hosts at 69/5 after 11 overs, tightening New Zealand’s grip. However, the momentum shifted dramatically in the 12th over thanks to a blistering counterattack from George Linde. He took on Cole McConchie, smashing two sixes and a four in a 17-run over that brought South Africa right back into the contest. Alongside him, Dian Forrester rotated strike well, as the hosts recovered strongly to 86/5 after 12 overs despite earlier setbacks.

New Zealand tightened their grip between overs 6 and 8 as South Africa moved to 51/3 after 8 overs. Cole McConchie struck immediately, dismissing Tony de Zorzi to reduce the hosts to 38/3 after 7 overs. However, Jason Smith and Rubin Hermann counterattacked to shift momentum. South Africa made a steady start but lost momentum midway, reaching 29/1 after 5 overs. Wiaan Mulder led the scoring with some attacking shots, including a massive six off Kyle Jamieson, helping his side to 17/0 after 3 overs. Lockie Ferguson kept things tight despite conceding a six to Connor Esterhuizen, as South Africa moved to 24/0 after 4 overs. However, the breakthrough came in the 5th over when Ben Sears dismissed Esterhuizen with a sharp catch by Tim Robinson. At the end of 5 overs, South Africa were 29/1, with Mulder holding the innings together while Tony de Zorzi had just arrived at the crease.

South Africa struggled to get going, reaching 5/0 after 2 overs, as Lockie Ferguson delivered a superb, tight over. Bowling with pace and bounce, he didn’t concede a single run off the bat, with only two leg byes coming in the over. Wiaan Mulder looked uncomfortable against the extra pace, missing a couple of shots, while Connor Esterhuizen also found it difficult to break free. New Zealand made an excellent start, keeping the pressure firmly on the visitors.

New Zealand found a late surge, moving to 151/6 after 19 overs, with Josh Clarkson providing the spark. He struck a boundary and picked up a couple of twos off Ottneil Baartman, while Cole McConchie rotated the strike to keep the scoreboard ticking. The final over turned into a game-changer as New Zealand finished strongly at 175/6 in 20 overs. Keshav Maharaj endured a tough over, conceding 24 runs as Clarkson went on a rampage, smashing three sixes and a four. McConchie also chipped in with a maximum, helping New Zealand post a competitive total after a powerful finish

Nqobani Mokoena kept things tight with clever variations, conceding just seven runs as James Neesham and Cole McConchie managed only singles and a couple. The pressure paid off in the next over as New Zealand slipped to 141/6 after 18 overs. Gerald Coetzee struck a crucial blow, dismissing Neesham for 8 with a sharp delivery that found the edge. McConchie provided a brief spark with a boundary and a couple, but wickets and tight bowling ensured South Africa stayed in control heading into the final overs.

Despite no wickets, South Africa continued to control the run flow during the middle overs.

Mixing his pace cleverly, he restricted the batters to just four runs and didn’t allow any boundaries. Devon Conway continued to anchor the innings, nudging his way to 56, while Mitchell Santner struggled to find fluency, managing just a single. The disciplined bowling ensured South Africa slowed the scoring rate effectively.

New Zealand kept the scoreboard ticking, moving to 68/2 after 9 overs. Nick Kelly looked positive against Keshav Maharaj, striking a boundary and rotating the strike well. Devon Conway continued his steady innings, inching closer to a half-century as the pair added useful runs. The momentum picked up further in the 10th over as New Zealand reached 81/2 at the halfway mark. George Linde had a slightly expensive over, conceding 13 runs, including two boundaries from Kelly. A couple of wides also helped the hosts’ cause. Conway moved to 46, while Kelly accelerated to 17, keeping New Zealand in a strong position heading into the second half.

New Zealand moved to 55/1 after 7 overs, with Keshav Maharaj striking despite an expensive over. Devon Conway dominated the spinner, smashing a boundary and a towering six to keep the momentum going. However, Maharaj provided the breakthrough by dismissing Tom Latham for 11, who miscued a reverse sweep straight to the fielder. Tim Robinson came in and got off the mark with a single, while Conway raced to 41, ensuring New Zealand maintained a strong scoring rate despite losing their first wicket.

Fans are surprised that Devon Conway and Tom Latham are opening for New Zealand. But Conway is in fine touch today. 

New Zealand reached 43/0 after 6 overs, closing out the powerplay without losing a wicket. Devon Conway continued to lead the charge, striking a powerful boundary off Ottneil Baartman and adding a couple more runs with an aggressive pull. Baartman generated some movement and beat the bat on a few occasions, but Conway managed to find gaps and keep the scoreboard ticking. He moved to 30, while Tom Latham remained on 11 as New Zealand put together a solid, wicketless powerplay.

New Zealand’s scoring rate dipped slightly as they moved to 36/0 after 5 overs, with Nqobani Mokoena keeping things tight. Devon Conway managed a couple of twos and a single but was tested by Mokoena’s short-ball tactics, even getting beaten outside off once. Tom Latham couldn’t add to his score in the over, missing a pull shot off the final delivery. Despite the quieter over, New Zealand remained steady with Conway on 23 and Latham on 11, still without losing a wicket.

New Zealand picked up momentum, reaching 31/0 after 4 overs, thanks to an impressive over from Tom Latham. Facing Ottneil Baartman, Latham broke free with a clever lap shot for six before finishing the over with a well-placed boundary past point. Baartman created a few chances in between, beating the bat with movement outside off, but Latham capitalised on the loose deliveries to collect 10 runs. Latham moved to 11, while Devon Conway remained steady on 18 as New Zealand continued their solid start.

Facing Gerald Coetzee again, Conway produced a classy boundary through cover-point and added a couple with a controlled pull shot. Coetzee mixed his lengths well and created a few chances, beating Conway on a couple of deliveries, but couldn’t find the breakthrough. Conway moved to 18, while Tom Latham remained on 1 as New Zealand maintained a cautious start without losing a wicket.

Incase you’ve missed out, South Africa’s Jordan Hermann has been ruled out of the series due to a hamstring injury. 

South Africa have won the toss and opted to field first! 

Seddon Park is expected to provide a more even surface compared to the Bay Oval. While the new ball could assist pacers early, the shorter boundaries and consistent bounce generally favour batters, with totals around 170–180 being competitive. For New Zealand, the task is clear: adjust quickly or risk slipping to 0-2 in the five-match series. Handling the early threat from Mokoena and Coetzee will be key if they are to post a challenging score.

South Africa head into the second T20I full of confidence despite fielding a relatively inexperienced squad.
