Famous Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani has died at the age of 91, the company informed Thursday.
“With infinite sorrow, the Armani Group announces the passing of its creator, founder, and tireless driving force: Giorgio Armani,” the iconic fashion brand was quoted as saying in a social media post.
The Armani group is one of the world’s most sought-after fashion brands.
Hollywood actress Julia Roberts, who made headlines in 1990 by wearing an Armani men’s suit to the Golden Globes, shared a photo with the late designer on Instagram, adding a broken heart emoji. “A true friend. A legend,” she said.
Reports said that Armani Group had planned a special event to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the formation of the fashion house by Giorgio Armani and his partner Sergio Galeotti in 1975.
After his death, uncertainty surrounds the brand’s future. However, it is expected that family members Silvana, Roberta, Andrea Camerana, and trusted aide Pantaleo Dell’Orco will oversee its operations.
Nicknamed “Re Giorgio” (King Giorgio) in his native Italian, the designer carefully managed every part of his work, from his collections to advertising, even helping with models’ hair before they walked the runway. A funeral chamber will be open on Saturday and Sunday in Milan, his home city, followed by a private funeral on a date yet to be announced.
Giorgio Armani, aged 91, forged an iconic global brand that combined Italian grace with a colourful flair. As per reports, the company’s annual turnover is USD 2.7 billion per annum.
Recent reports noted Armani was suffering from ill health for the past few days. This compelled him to miss out on Men’s Fashion Week held in Milan in June. This was reportedly the first instance of him being absent at one of the company’s fashion events.
