Russian President Vladimir Putin said his country wants to end the war but stressed that the “main causes” of the conflict must be fixed for any peace deal to last. He also warned Ukraine and the European Union not to create obstacles or use “secret tactics” to derail progress.
US President Donald Trump, speaking in a calmer tone, called the meeting “extremely productive.” He said that despite strong disagreements with Russia, there is a serious chance of a ceasefire in Ukraine.
Earlier, Trump had insisted business would not be discussed until real progress was made on peace. However, after the summit, the US president stated that Putin discussed forming a partnership with America in technology and space.
After the meeting ended, Putin invited Trump to Moscow. While signaling about the next meeting between the two, Putin said he would like to welcome Trump ‘in Moscow.’ In response, Trump joked that the idea might cause some criticism, but said he could see it happening.
