Chennai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in flood-hit Chennai this evening and conducted an aerial survey of the city and its suburbs.

He also met Tamil Nadu CM Jayalalithaa after which they both held a meeting to further discuss the prevailing flood situation.

PM Modi issued a statement and said, “I have seen the damage and misery caused by extremely heavy rainfall. The government of India stands by the people of Tamil Nadu in this hour of need. I have directed Rs.1000 crore to be released immediately by the Government of India to Tamil Nadu for immediate relief. This is over and above the Rs 940 crores which was released earlier.”

Earlier during the day, Home Minister Rajnath Singh had addressed the parliament and updated the law-makers on the flood situation in Chennai.

He had said that several NDRF teams had been released to help catalyse the rescue and relief operations in the flood-hit state of Tamil Nadu.
