NEW DELHI: After a glorious victory over New Zealand in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 final at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) amid a record-breaking crowd of 93,013, Australia Captain Michael Clarke has decided to take a back seat. Yes, the Captain of the World Champions has decided to take retirement from the One Day International (ODI) Cricket.

While Team Australia is sure to miss one of the best Captains, the question that boggles every mind is ‘Who’s Next? Well, there is no official statement from over the contenders, but let’s have a look on the star players probable of bagging the Captain’s tag after Clarke.

Steve Smith

One of the most talked names for the position, Steve Smith who followed Clarke’s role in last three Test series against India this season due to the latter’s injury would possible take over the charge.

Smith, who has shown an outstanding batting form following his four centuries in the four-Test India series with four repeated 50 more score, impacted further by his last start 105 off 93 balls in the World Cup semi-final victory over India, is sure to be named as one of the strongest contenders.

Turning 26 this June, the young age of the right-handed batsman is sure to add bonus points for him to lead Australia through the next World Cup in England in 2019.

George Bailey

32-year-old George Bailey, who captained the Australian Team in 27 matches in the past, enjoyed the win 55%.Bailey was also the Captain for Team Australia in the opening World Cup pool game against England while Michael Clarke recovered from his hamstring surgery.

Amiable and media friendly Bailey even though is a strong contender, but it seems that his age might not support him for the category as he would be 36 at the time of next World Cup in England.

David Warner

One of the most promising players of the Australian Cricket Team, David Warner, 28-year-old Warner is another strong contender for the Captain’s post after Clarke.

The vibrant opening batsman of the team, the quick-scoring batsman dominates the scoreboard with his wide array of aggressive shots. The young boy is also an athletic fielder, however, his temper will possible decrease his points, in comparison to calmer personality of Bailey and Smith under the game pressure.

While the fight is too strong to consider, the departing Captain of the team certainly expressed that Steve Smith is one name that would surely be talked about.

“Smithy has certainly matured as a player and a person,” Clarke said addressing a press conference, adding, “His form is because of his hard work and I am not surprised he is scoring as many runs as he is because he’s training extremely hard and he’s worked hard on his game. I don’t think it would be fair for me to say who’s going to be the next captain, that’s not my place, that’s up to the selectors. Smithy is certainly someone who will be spoken about.”
