2 More Teachers Detained for Tamil Nadu Girl's Death, family claims torture

A day after demonstrators set fire to school buses and vandalised property, two teachers in Tamil Nadu’s Kallakurichi district were detained on Monday for allegedly aiding a 17-year-old schoolgirl’s suicide. The principal and secretary of the school had been detained by police on Sunday.

Following the violent protests, police also detained 100 protestors, two AIADMK party members who worked in the IT department, and two party functionaries. The Madras high court directed the state government to form a special inquiry team on Monday.

Highways and Public Works Minister E V Velu stated that 278 individuals connected to the violence had been detained. “More arrests are coming.” On Monday, Velu visited the damaged school with Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, the minister of education.

Both the school administration and the police said that the child had leapt from her third-floor dormitory room. Her parents claimed that her teachers had tortured her.

The father’s request for a second autopsy was granted by the Madras high court on Monday. She appeared to have died from haemorrhage and shock as a result of several injuries, according to a post-mortem performed on July 14. The post-mortem report has been seen by HT.

Police have opened an investigation into a death that appears suspicious. Outside of the school and the government hospital in Kallakurichi, where the initial autopsy was performed, the girl’s family and other relatives have been protesting.
