On the eve of Supreme Court verdict on the rights of women to enter the Sabrimala Temple, the Centre has taken a u-turn on the ‘Right to Puja’ issue and has taken a stand on the same. Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma said, “NDA government cannot back Gender discrimination.”
Union Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma spoke to NewsX on the issue and expressed his views. He said, “The government would not like to treat the religious issues but we hope that the issues are settled. However, the government is of the opinion that discrimination on caste or gender basis should not be there at any religious place.”
Eminent personalities like Subramanian Swamy, Sri Sri Ravishankar, Morari Bapu, Zakir Hussain are in the favour of lifting of ban against the entry of women in certain religious places.
The question which rises now is that if the Centre backs the move, why don’t they legislatively or legally act to end this discrimination?
