New Delhi: Officiating the 2016 General Elections for the Legislative Assembly polls of four states and one union territory, Naseem Zaidi, Chief Election Commissioner, announced the polling dates for the respective constituencies of each state. 
The Election Commission stated that model code of conduct will come into immediate existence and any violation in the code of conducts will be swiftly acted upon by the EC. The commission urged voters of each state to register their names prior to the polling date as presenting election cards itself without prior registration will be deemed as invalid. 
The commission also announced that forces will be deployed for area domination, route marches, and will conduct visitations to vulnerable locations where weaker forces (ST, SC) will not be subjected to coercion. 
And a first for the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) in the General Elections, the pictures of the various candidates will be displayed in the Electronic Voting Machine. And NOTA (None of the above) symbol will also be included in the EVM machine. 
The dates on which the governing General Assembly will expire are: 
Tamil Nadu: 22nd May
West Bengal: 29th May
Kerala: 31st May 
Assam: 5th June
Puducherry: 2nd June
A total of 824 assembly constituencies will be up for polls in this General Election: 
Tamil Nadu: 234
West Bengal: 294 
Kerala: 140 
Assam: 126 
Puducherry: 30 
More than 17 crore or 170 million voters will be participating in this upcoming polls: 
Tamil Nadu: 5.8 crores 
West Bengal: 6.55 crores 
Kerala: 2.56 crores 
Assam: 1.98 crores
Puducherry: 9. 27 lakhs
