New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday paid tributes to late Biju Patnaik, the former chief minister of Odisha, on his 100th birth anniversary.

“Biju Babu was a man of the masses and a visionary who devoted his life to serving society. I pay my tributes to him on his birth anniversary,” Modi tweeted.

Biju Patnaik’s son and Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik also used Twitter to pay respects to his late father.

“Offer my tributes to legendary leader Biju Babu. Resolve to work to fulfil his dreams for Odisha,” he tweeted.

Biju Patnaik was born on March 5, 1916, and died on April 17, 1997. He was chief minister of Odisha for two terms. His political ideals were centred in socialism and federalism.

Patnaik was given honorary citizenship in Indonesia and awarded the ‘Bhoomi Putra’, the highest Indonesian award, rarely granted to a foreigner.
