New Delhi: The World Sufi Forum that began today, will see Delhi host (March 17-20) over 200 delegates from India and abroad. The 4-day event which has been organised by the All India Ulama and Mashaikh Board (AIUMB) is meeting to discuss the role of Sufism in countering rising global terror.
A delegation from 20 countries which includes spiritual leaders, scholars, academicians and theologists from Pakistan, USA, UK, Canada, Egypt and other nations are attending this 4-day event in New Delhi.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the event today, PM Narendra Modi welcomed the delegates “to a land that is a timeless fountain of peace and an ancient source of traditions and faiths.”
“Welcome to the ancient city of Delhi, built by the genius of diverse people, cultures and faiths,” he said addressing the guests.
Here are a few excerpts from the PM’s speech at the World Sufi Forum:
—At a time when dark shadow of violence is becoming longer, you are the ‘noor’ of hope.
—When young laughter is silenced by guns on the streets, you are the voice that heals.
—We all are the creation of God and if we love God we must also love all his creations.
—Sufism is the celebration of diversity and pluralism.
—It is the voice of peace, co-existence, compassion and equality; it is a call to universal brotherhood.
—Sufism’s contribution to poetry in India is huge. Its impact on the development of Indian music is profound.
—Sufism blossomed in India’s openness and pluralism. It engaged with her spiritual tradition and evolved its own Indian ethos.
—Of all the 99 names for Allah, none of them stand for violence.
—All our people, Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis, believers, non-believers, are an integral part of India.
—Just as it once came to India, today Sufism from India has spread across the world
—The fight against terrorism is not a confrontation against any religion. It cannot be.
—The global community must be more vigilant to counter forces of darkness with radiant light of human values.
—Diversity is source of richness of society, should not be a source of discord.
—Terrorists kill and destroy more in their own land and among their own people than they do elsewhere.
—At the beginning of a new century, we are at yet another point of transformation on a scale rarely seen in human history.
