Lucknow: A total of 47 policemen, who were involved in the 1991 fake encounter case, were on Monday sentenced to life imprisonment by a special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court.
In July 1991, 11 Sikh men were killed in cold blood, under the fake tag of ‘encounter.’ A bus carrying Sikh pilgrims was returning after visiting holy places. All the 11 Sikhs present in the bus were forced to step out of the bus after which they were taken to three different police stations. It is believed that they were allegedly killed in a fake encounter.
A lawyer filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Supreme Court after which the case was handed over to the CBI. The investigative agency found out that the encounter was a fake one and so all 57 policemen involved in the entire act were chargesheeted. Out of 57, 10 policemen died during the trial’s time period.
