Gudi Padwa is the first day of Chaitra month that marks the beginning of the New Year according to lunisolar Hindu calendar across Maharashtra.
Days before the festival, people start cleaning their homes and start preparations for the festival day. On the day of the festival, people decorate their doorsteps with Rangoli.
The day of Gudi Padwa begins with an oil-bath and eating Neem leaves ritual followed by prayers.
Gudi Padwa is one of the most famous harvesting festivals of India that marks end of winter season and beginning spring season.
On Gudi Padwa, a new pot made of silver, copper or bronze covered in auspicious red, yellow or saffron cloth is hoisted upside down at the entrance of the house. This is called the Gudi. It’s a sign of prosperity and good things to come.
According to Mythology, this day celebrates the defeat of Ravana in the hands of Lord Rama and his eventual happy return to Ayodhya.
